Which Oil is Best for Oil Pulling?

Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic practice that involves swishing oil in the mouth to promote oral health and overall wellness. While various oils can be used for this practice, each type has its unique benefits. In this post, we will explore the most popular oils used for oil pulling and compare their advantages. For basic information on oil pulling, please read our original post on Oil Pulling.

Oil for Oil Pulling

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is one of the most popular choices for oil pulling, and for good reason.

·         Antimicrobial Properties: Coconut oil contains lauric acid, which has been shown to possess strong antimicrobial properties, helping to reduce harmful bacteria in the mouth.

·         Moisturizing Effect: It helps to keep the mouth moist, making it a comfortable option for longer swishing sessions.

·         Flavor: The mild and pleasant taste of coconut oil makes it more palatable for many users.

Sesame Oil

Sesame oil has been used in traditional practices for centuries and offers a range of benefits.

·         Rich in Antioxidants: Sesame oil is high in antioxidants, which can help protect oral tissues from damage.

·         Traditional Use: It has a long history in Ayurvedic medicine, believed to promote overall oral health.

·         Anti-inflammatory Properties: Sesame oil may help reduce inflammation and promote healing in the gums.

Olive Oil

Olive oil is not only a staple in the kitchen but also a beneficial option for oil pulling.

·         Heart-Healthy Fats: Rich in monounsaturated fats, olive oil is beneficial for heart health and can contribute to overall wellness.

·         Antioxidant-Rich: Like sesame oil, it contains antioxidants that can help combat oxidative stress in the mouth.

·         Anti-inflammatory Effects: Olive oil has anti-inflammatory properties that may help soothe irritated gums.

Sunflower Oil

Sunflower oil is another option that is gaining popularity for oil pulling.

·         High Vitamin E Content: Sunflower oil is rich in vitamin E, which is beneficial for skin and oral health.

·         Neutral Flavor: Its mild flavor makes it a good choice for those who may be sensitive to stronger tastes.

·         Hydrating Properties: It can help keep the mouth hydrated during the swishing process.

Castor Oil

Castor oil, though less commonly used for oil pulling, offers its own set of unique benefits.

·         Antimicrobial Properties: Castor oil has natural antimicrobial properties that can help combat oral bacteria.

·         Detoxification: It is believed to aid in detoxifying the mouth and can help in reducing oral toxins.

·         Moisturizing Effect: Castor oil can help maintain moisture in the mouth, making it a soothing option for oil pulling.

Conclusion

Choosing the right oil for oil pulling can enhance the benefits you receive from this practice. Each oil offers unique properties that can contribute to oral health and overall well-being. Whether you prefer the antimicrobial benefits of coconut oil, the traditional roots of sesame oil, the heart-healthy advantages of olive oil, the vitamin-rich sunflower oil, or the detoxifying properties of castor oil, incorporating oil pulling into your daily routine can be a valuable addition to your health regimen. Experiment with different oils to find the one that works best for you!

A Simple Daily Health Regimen

Like many of you, I am always looking for easy ways to restore good health and stay healthy.  As you already know, I have dozens of posts on just this topic alone.  If one post doesn’t resonate, you can always try another post that will. This particular post may be a keeper.

BENEFITS OF OLIVE OIL / LEMON JUICE KIDNEY / LIVER CLEANSE
Lemon and Olive oil

The effects of combining olive oil with lemon juice is similar to combining chocolate with peanut butter. Each ingredient is respectable on its own, but together the effects are magical. The main difference is the former combo will help heal you, but the latter, not so much.

Organic Extra Virgin Olive oil on its own has been known to effect health in the following ways:

·       High polyphenol content

·       Antioxidant effect

·       Anti-inflammatory effect

·       Improve brain health

·       Improve heart health

·       Improve skin health

·       Strengthens bone health

·       Lowers blood pressure

·       Rich in Vitamin E and K1

Organic Lemon Juice on its own will effect health in different ways:

·       High citric acid concentration to prevent kidney stones

·       Alkalize the body, decrease inflammation

·       Detox and promote liver function

·       Antioxidant properties which contribute to healthy skin

·       Improve bone health -Natural source of Vitamin C and calcium

·       Hydrating with electrolytes

·       Boost immune system

·       Enhance digestive health

·       Can curb appetite

·       Helps regulate blood sugar

Together they create a powerhouse of support to help you heal and stay healthy.

Extra virgin olive oil has polyphenols which are known to be a strong anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory.  It has also been proven to fight free radicals and protect against cell damage. Because of this, it may help with chronic inflammatory conditions like arthritis, heart disease, and neurodegenerative disorders.  It also has Vitamin E and K  which can foster good bacteria in your gut.

Lemons have flavonoids which also have strong anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory qualities.

Synergistically, extra virgin olive oil and organic lemon juice have many extra exponential benefits.  They could boost hair and skin health, protect against diabetes and improve insulin resistance.  They may help lower blood pressure and help to reduce excess clotting that leads to strokes and heart attacks.  It may help with cholesterol, HDL and LDL levels, boost metabolism to aid in weight loss and aid in digestion.  It may guard against osteoporosis, help prevent gallstones/kidney stones, heal a fatty or enlarged liver, and may help fight mood disorders, Alzheimer's and depression.

So how do we imbibe this magical elixir?

This is the way I take it.  First thing in the morning on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before any food or medication.

·       1TBSP lemon juice

·       1 TBSP olive oil

Mix together in a shot glass.  Get it down in one swallow. You may want to follow it up with a sip of something more palatable, like water or juice.

It is essential to remember that “food is medicine” when properly dispensed and consumed. By feeding the body nutritional necessities and removing toxins, exceptional health can be achieved.  Olive oil with lemon juice does both. It’s a win!
